Slackware 2.6.12.2.

I have upgraded my machine once more! I now have zenwalk Slackware linux 2.6.12.2 and it works better and faster than Mepis! The kernel supports my USB drives perfectly and I can mount and umount them without any problems. I just had to run alsaconf as root to setup my soundcard and load the correct Kernel module for the SB PCI 128 sound card and I was done. I love how easy it is to install with a text installer, I tried SUSE 9.2, but the installer would not display properly on my system, and there was no text based alternative. So I chose to burn an ISO of Zenwalk and use that instead. But it works very well indeed, including Kernel 2.6.12.2 & Xfce desktop for Graphical work. And a stunning desktop environment. And abiword is a good word processor with good compatibility with Microsoft Office, and unlike Ooo it's interface has all of the menu items in the same place as MS Word. Which would make migration from M$ to Linux easier for those people who started off on Microsoft Office. And it can open *.doc files as well. Which means you can share files with others using Windows very easily. Who would not want a system with the latest kernel and up to date software?

And it comes with xine for playing movies and mp3's. And the iso was only about 398MB, much smaller than Fedora Core 4. I know you do not need to install all of those packages, but a smaller OS is good sometimes. And the Xfce desktop comes with a huge range of themes and styles for the desktop. I have set mine up to look like the Windows XP interface but without the BSOD's and spyware infections. Windows XP is a heap of shit, and Windows Longhorn will be no different. I have heard on Slashdot that someone had installed Internet Explorer 7.0 and it would not work with many sites and the browser had no uninstall option. Microsoft bashing may be immature, but not when they are asking for it. But of course there is no uninstall option, it is a core Windows component and you cannot uninstall IE on XP or Longhorn. But it would be nice if you could. But MS are not going to let the users uninstall IE and install Firefox or Mozilla are they? Have you heard about the lady from Australia who was caught with Ecstasy pills and pretended to be a Muslim wearing a Hajib and when she got back to Australia she went straight back to normal clothing? She is going to sell her story to the highest bidder. Well good on her, the Bali Nine are going to die, they are not going to get off so easily. They are going to be taken into the bushland and shot. Because they had drugs taped to their bodies. Even though they may have been forced to do it. That is no excuse for taking drugs into Asian countries which have a zero tolerance policy on illegal drugs. Only an idiot would do that. I have just heard that the bombing suspect that was killed was planning an attack on the memorial service for the 2002 Bali bombings. If I caught him, I would tie him down and rape him with a red-hot iron bar. Or push him head first into an oven full of red-hot coals and melt his face as he screamed in horrific agony.

Linux DVD Goodness.

I have installed a DVD ROM drive in my machine and it works very well with Kernel 2.6.10. I installed the DVD decoding drivers into /usr/local/lib and ran ldconfig as root and I was away! I am using xine to play my discs and it is the best, mplayer crashes every time I try to use it. But it works now and very well too with xine. My system was already setup to watch DVD's but I needed the libdvdcss drivers that work with libdvdread to decrypt and allow me to watch the movies. Neon Genesis Evangelion sounds much better on PC than playing the disc on a PS2. Better soundcard and all.

And you can use the mouse to select options in the DVD menus. As well as being able to jump straight to the DVD menu in Lord of the Rings the two Towers just by clicking the menu button on the xine DVD navigator without having to sit through the copyright screens. That saves time when you want to watch the movie and not wait about 10 minutes or so to get to the menu. But it will not work with Blade 2. And the animated menu's in the Star Wars Episode 2 DVD are very cool. My DVD drive came with Nero software for Windows but I already have K3b, and cdrecord. I am well served by that software. I only bought a drive with the cd and a couple of pieces of paper in a plastic bag. I did not need the box and other crap. I installed newer versions of SDL_mixer and SDL_net drivers and now I have thusly fixed the problem with the SDL drivers with the MEPIS OS. I had problems with prboom freezing randomly, but now I have fixed that. I installed the drivers from source using ./configure --prefix=/usr and that updated the drivers without any problems at all.

And thanks to the people who are using my Guestbook. You are all lovely people.

I love you all!
